As we get closer to Christmas and the festivities commence it is inevitable that reception staff will be required to handle some of the festive activities, from buying the Christmas tree to helping organise the office party and present buying.
Here are some tips on how to remain professional and help colleagues have fun during the festive season.
The Christmas tree
Whilst not every business will opt to have a Christmas tree those that do often position the tree in the reception area so that everyone can see it!
What is right for one office may not be right for another. If you are organising the Christmas tree here are a few things to remember:
1. Space: Work with the space you have got – sounds obvious but if you get really creative you can do a lot with a little
2. Think simple – over complicating things or going wild with decorations could create a mess
3. Try to think objectively, it won’t always be to your taste, consider company colours for your decorations
It’s party time!
It is the season for parties – whether you are organising the office party or simply attending there’s a couple of things to think about.
1. Behaviour: More grievances come out of Christmas celebrations than any other work situation over the year. Remember you are still in a work environment. By all means have some fun but it’s important to remain professional at the office party!
2. Drink: If there is alcohol being served make sure there are plenty of nonalcoholic beverages being served and lots of food
Be discreet
Christmas party gossip is inevitable but keep your wits about you and it won’t be you walking into the office in a panic the following working day.
Quite often you will see or hear things, either at the Christmas party itself or during the aftermath. Do not to add fuel to the fire by repeating gossip and look out for your colleagues if you think they are getting themselves in trouble or at risk of going to far.
Presents – do you or don’t you?
Should you give all your colleagues a present? What do you do when the boss gives you a present? Here are some basic rules of etiquette for presents at Christmas…
1. Company policy: First and foremost make sure you check what your company policy is on accepting and giving gifts
2. Culture: Think about the company culture and the type of gifts that might be acceptable. Ask a manager / HR representative if you are not sure
3. Share: There will be some gifts that are easier to share than others – if you are given a box of chocolates why not leave them on reception and share with colleagues and guests
Fast forward
Think about January now.
While most people don’t like to plan for next year at this time try to shift your mindset. If you don’t plan ahead for it January could end up a very unproductive month.
Use any spare time you have to plan and set targets for 2015. The Christmas period can be a great time to clear any clutter and get organised for the year ahead.
